Fun Friday!

We began our morning going to the LRC, or Library. 

     Mrs. Gonzales read a really cute story to us about tadpoles, and then another called, "Do Unto Otters," which was a story about manners.  The students enjoyed both stories and showed their manners well as they were such good listeners.

     Then we had a special treat when Justin's sister, Kelsey, came in from the eighth grade class to read to us.  Kelsey's book was actually a song, so she sang to us as she read the book.

And Kelsey is all dressed up for Rock Star Day, as we get ready to "Rock the Bearcats" at the Pep Rally this afternoon. 

    

     All students remembered to return their books from last week, so we all got to check out new books this week.  Parents, be sure to read the new library book with your child several times this week.  They get to keep the same book until next Friday.

     All week we have been learning the letter Gg.  We sang "Gus the Goat." Gus the goat was a goofy garbage man.  He gobbled garbage straight from the can. Granny's glass, garden gloves, gum, and grapes are what he loves.  Girls and guys all giggle when he eats the can. 

     Be sure to reinforce the /g/ sound.  Your child should be able to recognize the letters G and g, and tell you the sound that Gg makes. We made gorillas today for the letter Gg.  They are hanging in the hallway outside our classroom, so make sure you come and take a look.  Our cutting skills are getting better.  Parents, don't be afraid to let your child practice cutting with scissors at home.  We have talked about the correct way to hold our scissors.  We cut on the black line just like keeping a car on the road.  We have discussed safety with our scissors and how to hold them when we walk.  We NEVER EVER run while holding a pair of scissors and we ONLY cut paper.  Let your child practice cutting pictures from old magazines or newspapers.

     So far our phonics program has introduced three letters to us:  Ll, Oo, and Gg.  We now can blend those three sounds together and actually read our first word: /l/, /o/, /g/, log.

     Our Super Kid Treat this week was Green Eggs and Ham.  Mrs. Greenlee read the story of "Green Eggs and Ham" by Dr. Seuss to the students, and we made green eggs and ham.  The Super Kids got to taste them to see if they liked them. Yes, they did!! Say!  We like green eggs and ham! And we will eat them here and there. Say! We will eat them ANYWHERE!  In fact, they wanted more!

     We ended our day with the high school pep rally where the cheerleaders were dressed like rock stars and Mr. Early gave a great speech to the football players about their successful season so far.

     A glance at next week:  In Reading we will continue our "Off to School" unit.  We will read, "Boomer Goes to School."  We will listen to and say some more nursery rhymes like "Jack and Jill," "Humpty Dumpty," and "Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star," and rhyming words.  We will learn to read the sight word a in our Pre-Decodable Book A Farm, and the in The Lunch.  Our letter of the week will be Hh.  In Math, we will continue learning to recognize and write our numerals 1-5, take a look at patterns and measurement with taller and shorter.
