Field Trip to May Farm

     We took both Kindergarten classes to May Farm near Hawley yesterday, May 16, 2012.  The kids had such a good time.  Mrs. Brenda May explained all about her farm.  She takes in orphan animals or mistreated animals and gives them a good place to live.  All of the animals are very kid friendly.  They love for the students to feed them, pet them, and hold them.  What an exciting day!

The Rotan kids were very good listeners and very mannerly all day.

      Mrs. May had the day divided into four stations.  We began by feeding the larger animals.  We fed Dolly Llama, Don Juan, the billy goat,  Sugar Baby, the baby goat, and many others.  The children learned how to hold their hands flat, so the animals could easily get the food from their hands.

          Next we went to the small animal station where we were able to hold the hamsters, guinea pigs, baby chicks, and ducklings.

        When we rotated to the third station, we rode the horse, Cotton-Eyed Joe.  For some of the children, it was their very first ride on a horse.  

          A hayride on a trailer through the pasture was our last event at May Farm. Mrs. May gave us a wild and crazy ride on the trailer!  It was tons of fun with lots of squeals!  We left the farm, and went into Anson to the park for a picnic lunch of hot dogs, chips, and cookies. We had fun playing at the park. The kids were great all day, and we had such a fun time!

          As we prepared for our trip to May Farm, our class did a research unit on farm animals.  We read several non-fiction books about farm animals, what they do for us, and how to care for them.  Each day, we chose a farm animal to write about.  We compiled a book about farm animals.  Your children will be taking this book home with them at the end of this week.

            Isn't this little guy a cutie!?!  This is Jake.  We celebrated his first birthday last weekend.

I think Jake loves mud as much as the pigs do.



Leighton Reese Mullins

     Our baby is here!  She was born Monday, January 23, 2012 at 7:07 pm.  Leighton Reese Mullins weighed 7 lbs. 15 ozs. and was 20 inches long.  She doesn't have much hair, but what she has is light brown.  She is the prettiest little baby girl ever!! Mommy and Daddy are doing great.  They will be home from the hospital today.  I will stay through the weekend to help cook, clean, etc. so they can enjoy their new baby.
     Mrs. Nowlin is doing great with your kids.  I even received a report that they were working so hard, they almost forgot to go to lunch.  Now that means your kids were enjoying what they were doing, or believe me, they would have reminded her that it was lunch time!

My Family

       I mentioned in an earlier post that we had been busy in class, and that I had also been busy at home.  I'm not sure if I have ever introduced you to my family.  Many of you know them because you went to school with my children.  Well, here we are!

       I married my high school sweetheart, Donny, and we have been married for 31 years.  We have one daughter, Dayme, and her husband, Marcus (center back). We have two sons, Dane and David, who married sisters, Lori and Taylor.  David and Taylor (left) are expecting their first child.  Dane and Lori (right) have two boys.  Cooper is 4 (center back) and Jake is 8 months (in my lap). Dayme is our oldest and will celebrate her 30th birthday next week, then Dane, 28, and David is 26.

     

      David and Taylor are expecting a daughter any day now.  Leighton will be born Monday, January 23, 2012, if not before.  Right now our plans are for me to go Monday, when she is born and stay through the week to help out with the new baby.  So, I will not be at school next week, January 23rd-27th.  Mrs. Nowlin will be my substitute.  Many of you know Mrs. Nowlin.  She is a retired teacher who taught Kindergarten and 2nd grade for many years.  Actually, she is the one who taught me how to teach Kindergarten.  Your children will be in great hands while I am gone.  If you have any questions while I am gone, feel free to ask Mrs. Nowlin, Mrs. Greenlee, or call or text me on my cell phone.

      We are so excited about our first granddaughter!  It may be hard to get me down out of the clouds for awhile!
