Thursday, October 6, 2011, we will send home your child's first report card. Let me explain a little bit about what you will see in your child's report card packet.
1. AIMSweb Benchmark Report: There are two pages to this report: TEN, Early Numbers, and TEL, Early Literacy. Each portion of this benchmark assessment is timed. The student has only 60 seconds to complete each part. The Early Numbers portion is broken into 4 parts.
OCM - Oral Counting Measurement. This is exactly what it says. How high can the student count in 60 seconds.
NIM - Number Identification Measurement. The student is shown a page with random numbers from 0-10. Going from top to bottom and left to right, he must name as many numbers as he can in 60 seconds.
QDM - Quantity Discrimination Measurement. The student is given two numbers and must tell which one is larger.
MNM - Missing Number Measurement. The student is given a series of two numbers and a blank. Sometimes the blank is at the beginning, sometimes the middle, and sometimes the end. The student must tell what number goes in the blank. Example: 3, __, 5 4 goes in the blank or 6, 7, ____ 8 goes in the blank.
The Early Literacy is in two parts.
LNF - Letter Naming Fluency. Given lowercase letters in random order, the student names as many letters as she can in 60 seconds.
LSF - Letter Sound Fluency. Given lowercase letters in random order, the student tells as many letter sounds as he can in 60 seconds.
To read the AIMSweb report and see your child's progress, look at the green box. There is a black line across the green box that is the target for each skill. Your student's score is where the blue dot is. If the blue dot is on or above the black target line, he is doing great -- just what he is supposed to be doing. If the blue dot is below the black target line, he is below average and needs some extra help and extra work. We have a 30 minute block of time two different times in the afternoon when we pull the kids that need extra help and work with them individually or in small groups.
2. TPRI Report: I wrote a post several weeks ago about the TPRI. This report is the results of it. The thing you need to look for is a green D and/or a red SD. The green D stands for Developed and the red SD means Still Developing. These are Kindergarten skills. More than likely you will see more red SD's this time of year. By the end of this year in Kindergarten your child should be Developed and you will see green D's on the report.
3. Kindergarten Test: The very first week of school, we did a very informal check to see which letters each child could recognize and identify. We repeated this test at the end of the first six weeks. The letters that are circled are the ones that your child knows. We will continue to check each child at the end of each six weeks. When the student can recognize all 26 capital and all 26 lowercase letters and name 26 sounds of the letters, he/she will become a member of the ABC CLUB. The other part of the Kindergarten Test is counting. When the student can count to 100 without any help or prompting, he/she becomes a member of the 100 CLUB. When they become members of the ABC or 100 Clubs, they will receive a certificate on the Friday morning after report cards go home. We had a few that will receive certificates this Friday. If your child's Kindergarten Test is marked with either 100 Club or ABC Club, he/she will receive a certificate at 8:30 Friday morning, October 7th, in the hallway in front of Mr. Hargrove's office. Every Friday after report cards go home, we have a hall assembly to honor A Honor Roll, A-B Honor Roll, Reading Awards, and ABC and 100 Club members.
4. Hammer Pride Card: This is the discipline chart that is sent home with your child each week. It is marked with either happy faces or a note telling about a discipline problem we had at school that day. If your child received fewer than 11 notes about discipline problems he will be rewarded with a popcorn party on Friday afternoon.
Whew!!! That was long! There's a lot of information in that little report card packet that you will receive tomorrow afternoon. If you still don't understand after you look through all of it, do not hesitate to give me a call, and we can set up a time to look over your child's reports and discuss it all. My conference period is from 8:45 - 9:30 each morning.
One more thing. You do not have to return any of the reports. They are yours to keep. PLEASE, DO RETURN THE LAMINATED ENVELOPE, so I can use it again next six weeks. Thanks!!
